Hammer Toe Surgery

Surgical straightening of bent or curled toes to restore natural alignment.

About Hammer Toe Surgery

Hammer toes develop when an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments causes one or more toes to bend abnormally. Over time, the bent position can become rigid and painful. Hammer toe surgery corrects the deformity by releasing tight tendons, removing small pieces of bone, or using implants to straighten the toe. Dr. Quach selects the least invasive approach appropriate for each case.

Hammer toes are among the most common toe deformities treated at Foot Center of the Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Quach sees patients from throughout McAllen, Weslaco, Edinburg, and Mission who have been living with painful, bent toes that make shoe wear difficult. When splinting, padding, and shoe changes are no longer effective, surgery provides permanent correction.

Signs & Symptoms

Recognizing the symptoms early can help you get the right treatment sooner.

  • One or more toes bent at the middle joint
  • Corns or calluses on the top or tip of the affected toe
  • Pain and difficulty wearing closed shoes
  • Redness and swelling at the bent joint
  • Inability to straighten the toe

Common Causes

Hammer toes develop when a muscle-tendon imbalance causes the toe to bend at the middle joint. Contributing factors include tight or high-heeled shoes, genetic foot structure, trauma to the toe, and conditions like arthritis. Over time, the flexible bend can become rigid, at which point conservative measures are less effective.

Key Benefits

  • Restored natural toe alignment
  • Elimination of pain and shoe pressure
  • Improved foot function
  • Multiple surgical techniques available

What to Expect

The surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local or regional anesthesia. You will wear a surgical shoe during the initial recovery period, and most patients can transition to regular footwear within several weeks.

Recovery & Aftercare

Following hammer toe surgery, patients wear a surgical shoe for 3โ€“4 weeks. Pin removal (if used) occurs at approximately 4 weeks. Swelling may persist for several months but gradually resolves. Most patients return to regular shoes within 6โ€“8 weeks and experience significant improvement in comfort and appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hammer toes be fixed without surgery?

Flexible hammer toes can often be managed with splinting, toe exercises, and shoe modifications. Once the toe becomes rigid, surgery is the most effective option for permanent correction.

How long is a hematoma surgery?

The procedure typically takes 15โ€“30 minutes per toe and is performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.
