About Plantar Warts
Plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and appear on the weight-bearing areas of the foot. They can be painful, especially when walking. Our first-line treatment approach includes topical medications, cryotherapy, and other conservative methods before considering surgical or laser removal.
Plantar warts are a common condition we treat at Foot Center of the Rio Grande Valley. While they are harmless, they can be quite painful โ especially when located on weight-bearing areas of the foot. Our practice offers a complete range of treatment options, from conservative topical therapies to advanced CO2 laser removal.

Signs & Symptoms
Recognizing the symptoms early can help you get the right treatment sooner.
- A small, rough growth on the bottom of the foot
- Pain or tenderness when standing or walking
- Black dots (clotted capillaries) in the centre of the growth
- A callus forming over an inward-growing wart
- Multiple small warts clustered together (mosaic warts)
Common Causes
Plantar warts are caused by HPV infection entering through tiny skin breaks on the sole of the foot. Exposure is most common in warm, moist environments like swimming pools, locker rooms, and shared showers. Children, teens, and immunocompromised individuals are most susceptible.

What to Expect
The wart is evaluated and treated using the most appropriate conservative method. Multiple sessions may be needed for resistant warts. If conservative treatment fails, CO2 laser removal is available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are plantar warts contagious?
Yes. The HPV virus is contagious. Avoid walking barefoot in public areas, and do not pick at or scratch warts, as this can spread the virus to other areas of the foot.
How long does war treatment take?
Mild warts may resolve in 2โ4 weeks with topical treatment. Stubborn warts may require multiple treatment sessions over several months. CO2 laser removal typically resolves even resistant warts in 1โ2 sessions.
